An LED low bay light is an industrial light fitting designed for lower mounting heights, typically up to about 7 metres. We specify low bay lighting by starting with mounting height, not wattage. At lower ceilings, a fitting that is too narrow can create uneven patches, while a fitting that is too bright can create glare for staff working underneath it.
Moisture, dust, canopy exposure, panel ceilings and operating temperature then narrow the product choice. The aim is not simply more light. It is the right spread of light, at the right height, with a fitting suited to the operating conditions and maintenance access.

Wattage depends on mounting height, target lux level, fitting spacing and the task being performed. The low bay range can cover lower-output fittings through to higher-output options for 5-7 m spaces. A site assessment confirms whether the answer is wattage, spacing, beam angle or layout.
Yes, where the fitting, IP rating and mounting method suit the exposure. Canopies, awnings and loading docks often need lower-profile industrial lighting with moisture resistance and secure mounting. The final specification should consider wind exposure, water ingress risk, access and the required light level below.
LED low bay lighting is used at lower mounting heights, usually where wider light spread and glare control are important. LED high bay lighting is used above about 7 metres, where the fitting needs enough output and beam control to reach the floor without spreading too thinly.
Only if the fitting is rated for the operating temperature and moisture conditions. Cool rooms and insulated panel ceilings need fittings selected for low temperature, condensation risk and access constraints. Standard ambient fittings may not be suitable, even if the mounting height looks like a low bay application.
This is broadly more likely to be correct but will depend far more on the beam angle of the proposed light than whether it is labelled as being a low bay fitting. If you are trying to address a specific shortcoming of the existing lights, it is far better to get some advice and lighting designs. This step is worth it for peace of mind, and avoids the risk of selecting another unsuitable fitting. The right fitting might even cost less than the one you thought you needed.
This is very similar to the wattage question above. The right answer depends heavily on your actual ceiling height, which affects how far apart your lamps can be, and your intended usage in the space. Low-occupancy storage needs a lot less illumination than a final inspection zone for a manufacturing process.
As a rough guide, you can space low bay lights a similar distance apart to what the ceiling height is. So a 6 m ceiling can have lights approximately 6 m apart. But this will vary according to the light fixture beam angle and how uniform the light needs to be in the space.
